The church most certainly dates from the 12th Century,
possibly earlier. The original church was enlarged in 1865. The old 12th Century
nave was demolished and the church reconstructed by the addition of the north
arcade, north aisle and the chancel arch between the the old chancel and the
newly built nave. Further additions were made in the early part of the 20th
Century from designs by Sir Thomas JACKSON R.A. The castellated tower of the
church is unusual, being a mixture of stone and brick building. On the south
wall of the tower a memorial tablet is let into brown sandstone. This was laid
on 22nd Jul 1910 by Harriet Sarah, Lady Wantage in memory of her husband Robert
Lod Lindsey, Lord Wantage.Wheelwrights Arms converted into flast some 5 or 10 years ago. today.
